EdgeRush Curriculum

How will Flag Football enhance your curriculum?

Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate

(Primary National Curriculum, 2014)

These are the building blocks of Flag Football, using the sport is a great way to ensure that children are progressing in their PE learning. The EdgeRush curriculum, using the USA Football progression map to ensure age appropriate skill development, is designed to help children meet and exceed the expectations of the National Curriculum, utilising the skills of throwing, catching, running and jumping.

In Y3 and 4 we focus on the throwing and catching skills along with introducing the evasion skills that children will need to be successful. We work on fundamental skill development, ensuring that skills are taught in a progressive manner. Developing these skills will enable children to have success in a wide variety of sports, not just Flag Football.

In Y5 and 6 the focus shifts to more specific Flag Football skills, such as route running and snapping, and then defensive skills. Y6 children will have sessions to help develop the mental side of the game, working on strategy and teamwork. They will work collaboratively and have the chance to compete against their classmates and, potentially, other schools.

In KS3 and 4, children will be given the opportunity to develop the strategic side of the sport, as per the KS3 curriculum. Building on the skills they have learnt in KS2, children in Y7 to 11 will be given as much opportunity to be competitive using Flag Football as the vehicle to meet their National Curriculum objectives.

Flag Football offers a unique opportunity for children to meet, and exceed, National Curriculum objectives in an exciting, varied and engaging sport, a sport that is very different from the traditional sports ordinarily played in schools.

Different Roles and Skills

American Football is the ultimate team sport. Every person on the team has a role and a job to do and often they are all very different. However, everybody needs to do their job for the 'team machine' to be effective.

Flag Football is no different.

The number of roles on Offence and Defence mean that there are a huge variety of opportunities for children to be successful, build confidence and enjoy their time playing.

On Offence Quarterbacks throw the ball, Receivers catch the ball and Running Backs carry the ball. Even if you struggle with one of these skills you can use many others to be successful. Furthermore, there are football specific skills, like Snapping, that anyone can learn easily.

Defence is no different. Corners cover the fast players, Linebackers cover the runners and the Safeties use their brains to be in the right place at the right time. Everyone can pull flags, and make a tackle!

Unlike many traditional team sports, your success in Flag Football is not dependent on one skill. A wide range of skills and abilities make a strong team.

If you have children who are reluctant in PE, they can use the strategy side of the sport to gain success. Creating plays and organising plans is a vital part a successful team.

Forever Inclusive

Flag football is for EVERYONE! Unlike many traditional sports, Flag Football is mixed at every age group, including the adult level. We ensure that boys and girls play together. The nature of Flag Football means that girls and boys can be equally successful against each other, and this can really build confidence in girls.

Encouraging participation in girls

The inclusive nature of Flag Football enables girls to shine. They often outperform their male counterparts in KS2. Strategy, planning and organisation develops earlier in girls and this gives them an advantage. Also, with so many ways to be successful, there are multiple ways for girls to achieve, build their confidence and increase their engagement.
